Double materiality in three minutes

Two questions, one assessment: how the company affects people and planet, and how sustainability matters affect the company. A topic is material if either answer is yes.

Double materiality is the filter that decides what goes into a CSRD sustainability statement. It asks two separate questions and reports anything that passes either of them.

1. Impact materiality (inside-out)

Does the company have, or could it have, a material impact on people or the environment, through its own operations or its value chain? Think emissions, water use, working conditions at suppliers or product safety. Impacts are judged on severity (scale, scope and how hard they are to remedy) and, for potential impacts, on likelihood.

2. Financial materiality (outside-in)

Does a sustainability matter create risks or opportunities that could reasonably affect the company's cash flows, financial position, cost of capital or access to finance? Think carbon prices, water scarcity at a key plant, or new demand for low-carbon products.

How the two fit together

The two lenses often overlap. A heavy emitter both causes climate impact and faces transition risk. But they do not have to. A company can have a serious impact that does not yet hit its finances, and that impact is still reported.

What a good assessment looks like

  • Start from a clear picture of the business model and value chain.
  • List the impacts, risks and opportunities (IROs) for each sustainability topic.
  • Score them with thresholds you can explain, and involve affected stakeholders.
  • Document the judgements. Auditors will ask how you got from the long list to the short list.

After the Omnibus

The 2026 simplification keeps double materiality at the heart of the ESRS, but the simplified standards aim to make the process lighter and more top-down. Check the final delegated act before you redesign your process.
